Chapter 15

August 30th

“HERE WE ARE again, huh?” Kai said.

Judah’s brow sharpened, deadly.

Simone backed into Kai. “We’re all on the same side now. The side of living to see tomorrow?” She looked to Josie for support. “Right?”

Josie held Kai’s gaze. Her own feelings about Kai’s betrayal were muddled. Considering the current pressing circumstances, it hardly seemed to matter, but she could understand why Judah and the rest of the tribe might still think it did.

“It might be better for you,” she said to Kai, “if you get some supplies together, a tent from the warehouse, and scout out the surrounding area. Try to find some other gods who seem amenable.”

“In other words, lay low and try to do something useful,” Kai said.

“If you’re leaving, I’m going with you,” Simone said.

“Don’t stop making charms,” Josie said to her. “They can still protect us. In fact, now that the masks are gone, people are going to wish they had been a bit nicer to the artisan drudges around here.”

“How will you find us?” Simone asked.

“The locator charm,” Kai said to Josie. “It works both ways. Give it to Fire Guy over there, and he’ll be able to translocate right to us.”

Simone wrung her hands and took a step towards Josie. “You’re really going to consult the Fates?”

“I have to,” Josie said. She glanced at Judah, waiting for the argument, but it didn’t come. He stared at the floor, impassive-faced.

Pain. Everywhere.

Simone hurried across the room and gave Josie a quick hug. “Be safe.”

“You too.”

Simone returned to Judah. She hugged him too, for a long time. The sharp edge of his brow dulled until it had almost disappeared completely. Simone power.

Kai waited for Simone at the door. She looked back at Josie and Judah once more before she left.
